There's no point in telling a friend to stop doing something that is bad for them, whatever it may be. You might argue, that as a friend, you should intervene. But understand this:

People will never change just because someone tells them to, they have to want to change.

Therein lies the catch - they have to want to change. So long as they feel what they are doing is still understandable and reasonable, there is nothing in the world that you can say or do that is going to make them stop.

They might stop for a while, or lie to you altogether. But that is as far as their 'recovery' and your 'intervention' will go.

So never think that I don't care about you and what you choose to do with your life. It makes me so unhappy to see you like that. But it is your life, not mine and you are going to have to realise what you do is wrong. Then when you want to change, I will be there every step of the way. Until then, I will try to set a good example and hope you will follow through.
