The shatter looks better on one hand than the other and so here is a tip:

The more polish on the brush and the harder you press; the bigger the shatter sections. On my right hand I did not use as much polish and it was only a thin top coat - and so there's lots of little shatters... But I think the large shattered sections look better (since it shows large areas of the bottom coat layer.)
